Farmers Markets

For a real taste of the West Country you can’t beat local produce. South Devon has a well-established agricultural industry, award-winning dairies and some of the best seafood in the UK, and if you like something a bit spicier there’s even a local chilli farm. If you’re heading to South Devon for a well-deserved break, be sure to check out the local farmers markets. They might not be as convenient as a supermarket, but nothing compares to the taste of fresh, organic vegetables or a farm-made game pie. The food you buy at farmers markets is as fresh as possible and exploring the produce is a fantastic and appetite-whetting way to spend an afternoon.

Many of the farmers markets in the region are suppliers to local inns and restaurants, offering more than just the usual selection of meat, fish, vegetables and dairy produce.

Local Delicacies

Bovey Tracey’s Farmers Market takes place every other Saturday, from 8.30am to 1pm. Head for Union Square and you’ll find around 15 well-stocked stalls selling local produce and local delicacies such as home made jams and chutneys. By comparison, the farmers market in Newton Abbot is a much larger affair, taking over the pedestrianised area in the town centre. This takes place every Tuesday and on various Fridays throughout each month. Here you’ll find produce from suppliers such as Bread of Devon, Farmhouse Pies and Pasties and The Devonshire Deli, which sells local cheeses and honey.

How to Find a Farmers Market

Most of the larger villages and towns in South Devon hold some kind of farmers market. You can find out where the nearest one to your holiday destination is being held by checking out websites such as farmersmarket.net or the town’s own website. Alternatively, once you’ve unpacked grab a copy of the local paper, which should have details of when and where the next one is being held.
