Historic Attractions
History buffs and horticulturists are in for a treat in South Devon. With a very rare surviving monastery, grand country houses and spectacular gardens, the historic houses and gardens of South Devon open up a world of heritage and culture for everyone. Away from the noise and bustle of the cities you’ll discover South Devon’s country estates situated in tranquil settings and beautifully managed by a range of organisations keen to preserve their heritage for the public to visit, learn about and enjoy.
Wandering about Buckfast Abbey, a monastery complete with monks, church and monastic grounds, the self-sufficient lifestyle and atmosphere of spirituality will inspire you to pause from your hectic modern lifestyle and reflect on how the past can survive and remain relevant through a complete faith in preserving ancient traditions. The Abbey church is a thought-provoking building, packed with the treasures of history. All around there are exhibitions, information points and shops selling a range of homemade products, with some more unusual gifts for you to try, like the Abbey’s famous tonic wine.
Bringing history to life
If the solitude and serenity of a monastery isn’t your thing then the imposing castles of South Devon bring to life the conflict and power that has shaped the county. Powderham Castle is a stimulating
day out in beautiful surroundings, where intriguing stories and displays bring history to life. But don’t think it’s all falconry displays and knights on horseback. There’s a Silly Mini display in April for fans of the iconic car and music fans can catch Jules Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra in July. The castles of South Devon are packed with events and exhibitions throughout the year, each with its own theme and unique perspective on the history of the area.
With every grand building there comes a grand garden. In the grounds of Bitton House the Teignmouth Orangery stands out as a unique 19th Century growing house for fruits and flowers you wouldn’t normally find in an English country garden. Rhododendrons, Camellias and Azaleas created a dazzling array of colour and fragrance at Lukesland Gardens, Ivybridge. With changing colours through the year, South Devon gardens are fabulous in any season and provide an ideal opportunity for you to ‘stop and smell the roses’.
