Elias Parish Alvars International Harp Festival 2008

World renowned musicians are coming to Teignmouth for the first ever international Harp Festival, marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of Elias Parish Alvars.

The event takes place in memory of Elias Parish Alvars, a remarkable musician. Alvars was born in Teignmouth, South Devon in 1808, and became the founder and pioneer of the Harp as a solo repertoire instrument. Revered by contemporary musicians including Mendelssohn and Berlioz, his outstanding compositions progressed the newly developed double action harp, reciting from England, St Petersburg, Constantinople and throughout Europe.

The inspiration of Florence Sitruk, Professor of Harp at the Geneva Haute Ecole de Musique and Lithuanian Music Academy Vilnius, herself an internationally renowned harpist, the festival will bring together young inspiring Harpist’s wishing to compete in the 1st Elias Parish Alvars International Harp competition for 10 – 14 year olds.

The festival element of this four day Harp extravaganza will comprise of Gala concerts, lectures, workshops; and will end with a Gala Closing concert, a tribute by Florence Sitruk and other internationally acclaimed Harpists to the works not only of Elias Parish Alvars but fellow composers from the same period including, Lenz, Baerman.

Set within the beautiful coastal town of Teignmouth, using different venues throughout this magnificent town, the festival will bring together great names within the musical world to celebrate the life and works of Teignmouth’s own ‘King of Harpists’
