Plymouth artist Paul Hannon returns to Harbour House for his second solo exhibition at the Kingsbridge art gallery. The show, 4 Slices, runs from 18 - 30 November 2008.
Paul Hannon's semi-abstract mixed media paintings explore the physical and spiritual themes of human existence, and he will explain more about the thinking behind his work in a gallery talk at 12 noon on Thursday 20 November. Everybody is welcome to this informal event, there's no need to book, and admission is free.
Intrigued by the circumstances, encounters and opportunities that effect and shape a journey through life, Paul uses subdued colours and a restricted palette to give a dreamlike, and occasionally a nightmarish, quality to his paintings.
A small motif, or a mere suggestion of narrative, allows the viewer to make personal interpretations of the work and to respond intuitively on a journey which can be ambiguous, spiritual, meditative and, at times, challenging.
Paul often works in series, finding that one image can rarely offer a solution to a complex train of thought, and he explains, "I deliberately dissect the constituent parts that make up an experience, ultimately presenting them as several inextricably linked interpretations.
I work to the philosophy that an artist's reach should always exceed his grasp, and to this end I constantly strive for freshness and honesty."
4 Slices, Paul Hannon's exhibition of paintings and mixed media works, opens at Harbour House in Kingsbridge on Tuesday 18 November. Opening times are 10 am - 4 pm daily, until the close of the show on Sunday 30 November. There will be an informal gallery talk with the artist at 12 noon on Thursday 20 November. Admission is free.
