William Pengelly Cave Studies Trust

Local limestone quarrying in the 19th Century exposed many caves. William Pengelly, a renowned cave scientist, visited Buckfastleigh in 1859. Higher Kiln Quarry caves house a protected bat colony and hold an important 100,000 year old fossil bone deposit which includes rhino and hippo. The museum displays books and leaflets to explain the complexity and importance of the site.

New improved quarry access via a boardwalk, unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Public guided walks Wednesday and Thursday in August 11am and 2pm. Group visits May-August by arrangement.
