Refectory and kitchens for Benedictine Priory c1088-1536. Established as the Guildhall by Edward VI on 30 June c1553. Mayor is still sworn in each May. Magistrates Court c1624- 1974. Jail c1624-1887. Famous visits to Guildhall: Charles I in c1625, Elizabeth II in c1962. During the Civil War Prince Charles and Lord George Goring. Oliver Cromwell and Sir Thomas Fairfax in January c1646. The building was used to billet Cromwell's troops in c1646. Some died in the Guildhall of plague brought to Totnes by the army. Most important historic building in Totnes.
Nearest major road is A385. Follow the signs to Town centre and car parks, walk to main street. The Guildhall is behind St Marys Church.
Nearest station is Totnes station. Walk to main road- crossroad immediately opposite railway station. Exit road to Kingston Gardens. Walk up this street into Castle Street, under the arch and turn left into North Street. From here into Church Close, we are just off here.
