Wooder Manor nestles in a picturesque valley in the environmentally sensitive area of the Dartmoor National Park and is only a level 0.5 miles from the world famous Widecombe-in-the-Moor village. Widecombe Fair dating back to 1850 still takes place every year. Wooder Manor is surrounded by unspoilt woodland, moors and granite tors and is the perfect antidote to the stress of modern life. Walkers are spoilt for choice with walks to suit everyone starting from the doorstep, from a leisurely stroll to a hike on the moor. The Dartmoor National Park also organise guided walks.
The cottages and converted coachouse sleeping 2 to 4, 4 to 6 or 8 to 12 are inspected by Visit Britain each year and are clean and very well equipped. Central heating. Laundry room. Gardens and easy off-road parking.
Wooder Manor is an ideal and central location for touring Devon and exploring Dartmoor by foot or on horseback and there are also good opportunities for painting, bird watching, fishing, golfing, cycling and letter boxing. A lot of our visitors take a keen interest in the local archaeology. Dartmoor is rich in prehistoric remains with the nearby medieval settlements at Hound Tor and Grimspound being very good examples. At nearby Haytor the granite tramway is still clearly visible. Our guest also enjoy the many legends and folklore for which Dartmoor is renowned – Jay’s grave, hairy hands, the Hounds of the Baskervilles….
Places to visit include National Trust properties at Castle Drogo, Buckland Abbey, Lydford Gorge and Saltram House. Family attractions include Woodlands Leisure Park, Pennywell Farm, Miniature Pony Centre, Dart Valley Steam Railway and Becky Falls.
Widecombe-in-the-Moor village has a church known as the Cathedral of the Moor, post office/general stores/off licence, National Trust Information Centre, gift shops, tennis court, play area, riding stables, Wayside Café, The Green Café, The Old Inn and The Rugglestone Inn (real ale).
