Woodside Guest House

Woodside Guest House is a wonderful Victorian Villa, full of character, set in its own secluded grounds just a stroll away from Teignmouth town centre, the river Teign and the seafront.

in 1877 the noted Teignmothian builder Richard Valentine built Woodside for himself and his family. Many of the original features remain including nearly all the fireplaces and cornices. The external walls are eighteen inches thick and contain large granite rocks. This house was built to last! The guest house has five individually and exquisitely decorated bedrooms with eclectic antique furniture and en suite facilities and televisions. There is a ground floor room and another with a four-poster bed to the curious or the romantic.

Some of the rooms have a beautiful view of the sea, estuary and the Ness - a magnificent cliff jutting out into the sea. These rooms are often requested in advance by those in the know.

Our dining room, originally the kitchen in Victorian times, still has a Victorian range cooker and is truly unique and interesting! You will not be staring at four blank walls or listening to canned music when you tuck into our famed English or continental breakfast. We also make an effort to save food miles and buy fresh produce locally. We cater for young children, vegetarians and vegans (although advance warning is much appreciated if you have a particular dietary requirement).

Do not be surprised if you loiter almost unintentionally in the communal areas as you ponder the fascinating collection of artwork and pictures. You may need to resist or risk being transported to a time when Victorian seaside resorts were visited by the well-heeled English visitor. You will feel a million miles away from the hubub of the city and stress-free for your stay. This is affordable luxury on your doorstep, easily accessible and usually speaking a language you may be able to understand. We are not abutted by any public highways and experience few of the sounds of town centre.

We welcome families, who can stay in our large family rooms, that can accommodate up to four people. These rooms also come with video/DVD players and we can provide cots. Children under two years old stay for free!! We try to pay attention to detail, and always want to make your stay one you will wish to repeat.

If you love your car/motorcycle more than life itself, you will appreciate our parking, which is away from and not visible from any public street. We have security lighting and will be adding CCTV for security in 2009.

Teignmouth is no ordinary seaside resort and Woodside is no ordinary guest house. Nothing about Woodside is humdrum or dull, and the owners are something else! We do not do twee. If you like mass produced blocks of identical rooms and impersonal staff, there are hotel chains who will meet your demand. If you like diversity, eccentricity and English charm, try Woodside!
