South Devon is renowned for its beauty, breath taking locations and the adventures to be had there. Did you know however, that South Devon is home to some weird and wonderful events and activities for visitors to explore. From Animal Yoga to Orange Races, Dog Festivals to Welly Wang competitions there are plenty of opportunities to have an unusual day out in South Devon.

Treat your Dad to a day out at The World of Country Life this Father’s Day (18th June) and they can test their Welly Wanging skills in their annual competition.  With free entry to the park for Dad’s and Grandad’s it promises to be a fun day out for all the family (conditions apply).

This summer sees some spooky goings on at Kents Cavern with evening ghost tours taking place.  Or for a magical and entertaining weekend (22nd & 23rd July) a visit to The Midsummer Dreams Festival in Dartington promises a weekend of theatre, puppetry, comedy, circus and music for all the family.

Our canine friends have not been forgotten either. Head to Dartmouth on the 5th of August for Woofstock UK – a festival set up from a dogs perspective.  Dog shows, agility courses, demonstrations, live music and even a doggy chill out zone, including doggy massage, can all be enjoyed on the day.

Or to enjoy a different type of dog – a downward dog – partake in a relaxing hour amongst the countryside and the famous Pennywell miniature pigs with their Animal Yoga classes. On throughout the year these classes are a fantastic way to up-lift your mood surrounded by stunning landscape and animals.

For the more competitive out there the unique Totnes Orange Races sees people racing and chasing oranges down a steep high street in Totnes. Taking place on the 22nd August the different age-range races take place throughout the day; the aim being an intact orange at the end of the race!

If you’re looking to enjoy examples of the old British traditions the Town Crier Competition in Newton Abbot on the 9th September should not be missed. Town Criers from far and wide come and compete in this annual competition.

Finally those thrill seekers amongst you will love the experience of the Ottery St Mary Tar Barrels event, an old custom said to have originated in the 17th century, which is held on November 5th each year.  Feel the lick of the flames as you watch the carriers run along the streets with the burning barrels on their backs.
