Baxters is passionate about craft, ceramics, sculpture and jewellery handmade in the UK by designer makers. We show contemporary artists and a wide selection of Dartmouth art prints. The bright and airy space of Baxters on the corner of Foss Street and Flavel Street in Dartmouth shows off the best in contemporary art, printmaking, craft and jewellery.
Ken Eardley is known in the craft world as "Lovely Ken" and I have known him for about 30 years I think - from when he had a studio in Cockpit Studios in London.
This highly popular and collectable ceramicist started with a background in textiles. He then moved on to create a distinctly fun and graphic range of functional ceramics for kitchens and interiors including mugs, jugs, vases, plates and bowls. The "fat jugs" in this image were inspired by him turning a bowl upside down.
All his pieces are hand-made glazed earthenware and are made using press-moulds with hand-cut stencil decoration which are then fired three times.
Ken’s pots are very striking and highly popular and reflect his sense of humour.

I visited in the summer with a friend and we spent ages browsing and dithering. In the end we left to think and came back before making our purchases, there was no pressure and the lady (maybe owner?!) cheerfully rummaged around to find other examples of prints to show us and offered suggestions without being pushy. She even told us Dodgy were playing on the green at the music festival! Helped make our visit to Dartmouth really enjoyable.
