The beautiful picturesque village of Beer is located on the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coast in Devon.  Surrounded by white chalk cliffs, the shingle beach is lined with fishing boats still bringing in their daily catches and is famous for its mackerel.

On the edge of the South West Coast Path, Beer has some of the most stunning coastal walks in the county, one of the best being from Seaton to Beer with dramatic views across the Jurassic Coastline. Beer was also named recently by Countryfile as the Top Picnic spot in the UK from Jubilee Gardens at the top of the headland, chose for its stunning view of the beach and village from the hillside.

Things to Do in Beer

A day in Beer is best spent exploring the coastal walks and views from the cliffs that surround this pretty fishing village. Walk right and head to the town of Seaton, or left and walk to the village of Branscombe – either way the views will astound you.

Beer beach is a shingle beach, great for family days out as well as relaxing in a deckchair admiring the view. Beer Quarry Caves are worth exploring with daily tours through this ancient quarry that dates back to Roman times.

There are many family friendly attractions nearby, Bicton Gardens, Crealy Adventure Park, and the Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary. Mackerel fishing boat trips are available from Beer Beach, or if you fancy a little history, head to Exmouth to do a Jurassic Coast Cruise with Stuart Line Cruises.

Although small, Beer's pleasant flint-studded buildings include interesting shops and galleries, and excellent places to eat.

History of Beer

Beer's long fishing heritage is still very much alive today, with a colourful population of fishing boats, fresh fish and Beer crab for sale, and mackerel fishing trips. In the past Beer was equally well known as a smuggling base and the home of notorious Devon smuggler, Jack Rattenbury. It was also famous for fine lace including the lace flounce for Queen Victoria's wedding dress crafted in Beer by Miss Jane Bidney and her team of 200 workers.

Whats on in Beer

In Beer where life has always centred around the sea, it is not surprising that the most important date in the events calendar is the annual Beer Regatta in August where distinctive Beer luggers with striking red sails are always an imposing sight. Another popular event in Beer is the annual Beer Rhythm & Blues Festival in October.
