Sidmouth is a beautiful coastal town with a regency feel which is ideal for visitors of all ages. Sat in the middle of spectacular countryside Sidmouth is home to beautiful beaches, stylish eating places and great shopping, with everything from unusual gifts, designer clothing and lifestyle goods available.

Things to do in Sidmouth

Sidmouth lies on the Jurassic Coast and the coastline is dominated by the vivid red sandstone cliff which date back to the Triassic period. Along the front is the Millennium Walkway which stretches the length of the beach, which is made of pebbles, providing the perfect background for an afternoon stroll. Sidmouth Beach is a perfect family friendly beach, ideal for safe swimming and rock pooling at low tide with great on site facilities. 

Sidmouth is a great town for walking, to the east of town the South West Coast path leads to the picturesque villages of Branscombe and Beer and on to Seaton, to the west the coastal path leads to Ladram Bay with its stunning red rock stacks and Budleigh Salterton.  You will definately deserve an icecream once you have climbed the stunning cliffs and admired the view. 

In Sidmouth and the surrounding countryside you’ll find a great range of attractions and activities providing a fun day out that the whole family can enjoy. A top day out is a visit to the Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary with over 500 rescue donkeys to pet and feed. World of Country Life is just a few miles away and is an award winning family day out. 

Take some time to explore the town centre, rich in royal and architectural history, as well as discovering a great range of shops, cafe's and restaurants.  Sidmouth sits in the middle of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is surrounded by spectacular scenery and vista’s. The landscape is a wonderful mix of wooded combes, heathland and hilltops. A short distance away from Sidmouth, overlooking the town from the top of a steep hill, you will find the dramatic heathland of Mutters Moor, the haunt of the elusive nightjar.

Top events

Each year Sidmouth and the surrounding towns and villages host a wonderful range of events, in June the town plays host to the Sidmouth Literary Festival and August the annual, and very popular, Sidmouth Folk Week, where amateur performers, multi-national and local bands take over hotel lounges, pubs and pavements. At the end of August each year is Sidmouth Regatta when the town comes together to celebrate.

History of Sidmouth

The resort was very fashionable in the 1800s and was visited by Queen Victoria in her youth as well as the Grand Duchess of Russia in 1831. Sidmouth is home to hundreds of listed building and a liberal sprinkling of blue plaques can be found around the town.

Public Transport Directions

BY RAIL & BUS SERVICES: Fast trains from London (Waterloo) to Honiton and from the North, the Midlands and London (Paddington) to Exeter St Davids. Frequent bus services connect St. David’s with Exeter bus station from where there is a regular bus service. There is a regular bus service from Honiton railway station except on Sundays. Visitors are advised to consult Stagecoach Devon, telephone 01392 427711 and/or National Rail Enquiries 08457 48 49 50 for details.
