Nestled along the banks of the River Yealm, this picturesque locale boasts a rich tapestry of rural landscapes, historic architecture, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

History of Yealmpton

Yealmpton boasts a fascinating history that dates back centuries. The village's name is derived from the River Yealm, which flows through its heart, and the Old English word "tun," meaning settlement. With roots dating back to Saxon times, Yealmpton grew in prominence as a market town and agricultural centre during the medieval period.

One of Yealmpton's notable landmarks is the Grade I listed Church of St. Bartholomew. This ancient parish church, with its impressive architecture and serene churchyard, stands as a testament to the village's enduring heritage. Dating back to the 14th century, the church provides a glimpse into the past, with its historic features and a palpable sense of reverence. Interestingly, Yealmpton is also home to a 400-year-old stone cottage, where it is said a version of the famous rhyme ‘Old Mother Hubbard’ was written!

The heart of Yealmpton is marked by its historic square, a delightful focal point surrounded by charming cottages and local businesses. The village exudes a timeless quality, with its narrow winding lanes and well-preserved buildings reflecting centuries of history.
