If you’re looking for a great spot for a family beach holiday, take a look at Teignmouth. On top of the traditional sun, sand and surf there’s loads more to see and do that’s guaranteed to keep the kids and the grown ups entertained.
Old-School Holidays
The beach itself is a long one so you don’t need to worry about the crowds, even during the summer. It stretches down from the mouth of the River Teign and is overlooked by an impressive Victorian Pier. Teignmouth beach is one of those beaches that will take you back to your childhood: you’ve got local fishermen mending their nets, a parade full of amusements and old-school activities like catching sand eels and exploring rock pools. Teignmouth is also a dog-friendly beach, so you can even bring the hound along.
Local Days Out
If you get fed up of just kicking back and relaxing, there are pleasure boat cruises around the bay or up the river and there’s even a passenger ferry that’ll take you across the water to Dawlish. Dawlish is a great spot for a day out, with a sandbar that’s ideal for whitebait fishing and a couple of family-friendly pubs serving local ales and cider. Teignmouth beach has won an award from the Marine Conservation Society and the waters are so clean that you can sometimes spot dolphins just off the coast.
If you’re feeling thirsty or the kids need re-fuelling, there’s a beachside café serving drinks and light bites and there are nearby toilets so you don’t get caught short. Onsite parking means you don’t have far to carry your beach gear and there’s disabled access for those with mobility restrictions. There’s also plenty of accommodation nearby including family-run hotels and B&Bs. You’ll also find self-catering cottages in the area or you can get back to nature on one of the local campsites. Teignmouth isn’t far from other major towns such as Exmouth and Newton Abbot, so in the evenings you can check out some of the local nightlife.
