Dramatic fortified National Trust manor house dating from 1340-1480, rare restored survivor of medieval England. The castle has been lived in by the Gilbert family for most of the last 600 years and is still their home today. Sir Humphrey Gilbert was coloniser of Newfoundland and half-brother to Sir Walter Raleigh.
Within the curtain wall can be found the Old Kitchen with spiral staircase to the Guard Rooms, restored Great Hall – where more can be learnt of the Gilbert family and their Elizabethan explorations – Solar, sub-solar and chapel. There are also rose and knot gardens.

Compton Castle open on Bank Holidays only if a Monday.

Nearest major road is A380. A380 1.5 miles north of Marldon, 5 miles west of Torquay. A381 2 miles south of Ippelepen, Newton Abbot/Totnes Road. Coaches (must be pre-booked) must approach from A381 at Ipplepen - 2 miles.
Nearest train station is Paignton station - 3 1/2 miles.
