Home / Festivals and Events in South Devon / Teignmouth Folk Festival
Once again we had a highly successful festival. It was enjoyed by all despite having to dodge the heavy showers.
Teignmouth festival-goers were spared the atrocious Glastonbury weather conditions to see rising stars, John Spiers and Jon Boden. The up-and-coming duo came to Teignmouth on their way to appearing at Glastonbury, to perform in our Saturday afternoon concert. They were ably supported by Ian Bruce.
Friday night starred another major group on the folk scene - Last Night's Fun. They are a quartet who play mainly Irish music interspersed with a line in droll humour.
The inclement weather on Saturday sent the school displays scurrying to the shelter of the marquee. However, it did not spoil things and it was much enjoyed by parents, grandparent and festival-goers alike.
The Saturday evening Ceilidh led by local band, Rumpus, was as popular as ever.
Sunday's main event was the "Traditional Devon Year" a pageant in music and song. This featured Dartmoor step-dancing, children's maypole and broom-dancing and a mummer's play by Platform 9 Theatre Group, all ably backed by Teignmouth Community Choir.
Also, as part of this, there were demonstrations of stone-walling, cob-walling and thatching with a video of hedge-laying.
Throughout the weekend the town was full of colour as the various Morris sides, comprising Cotswold, North-West, Border Morris and Appalachian, danced at the open air venues.
