Attractions and Things To Do in Shaldon
If you’ve never been to Shaldon, you’ve missed a real treat. Situated on the South Devon coast across the Teign estuary and opposite the resort of Teignmouth, Shaldon is an unspoilt village with a thriving community. Many families in the village are still linked to the fishing industry and with a great range of local shops and attractions, it’s an ideal place for a relaxing holiday. Shaldon isn’t as commercial as many of the South Devon towns, but is perfect if you want to experience real Devon life firsthand.
History
The original settlement was a little upstream, where the fertile valley was cultivated. Shaldon is built on reclaimed land from silt, and there is a retaining wall that prevents the sea from returning to the beaches. Gradually the inhabitants turned to fishing, although the village still has a very rural feel.
Things to do
There are some great days out around Shaldon, with clean beaches that are ideal for swimming, sailing, rowing, paddling and rock pool exploring. Shaldon Zoo is home to a unique collection of smaller endangered species including monkeys, meerkats and more can be found in its woodland setting. Shaldon Approach Golf Course is also very nearby - call 01626 872484 for more information.
Food and drink
You may be surprised to hear that we make a rather good bottle of wine here in South Devon. The Old Walls Vineyard is situated on steeply sloping south facing land, and there is evidence to show the Romans had a vineyard here nearly two thousand years ago. You can visit the vineyard and try a tipple of the local Devon wine. For fine dining try the Ness House Hotel, and for top quality seafood the Tide Restaurant is noted for its mussels. Jazz evenings take place at the Clifford Arms, a beautifully restored bar with a friendly atmosphere and comfortable surroundings.
Something a little different
If you’re a true foodie, you’ll find inspirational dishes served in classical style at ODE restaurant, one of Devon’s newest additions to fine dining. With organic and ecological principles the restaurant prides itself on good local produce.
For a great party, Shaldon Water Carnival features what could be the oldest running regatta in the world. It’s a festival of watery fun and ideal for families.
