Garden centres in South Devon

As the days grow longer and the temperature begins to rise, there's no better time to delve into the wonders of gardening. 

With Earth Day (22nd April) and National Gardening Week (29th April - 5th May) just around the corner, enthusiasts and beginners alike are gearing up to celebrate their love for all things green and growing. And what better way to kick-start the festivities than by exploring the charming garden centres nestled in the picturesque landscapes of South Devon? 

We’ve put together an extensive list of all the great garden centres in the region that you can visit to pick up a plant or two (or three… or four!), get inspiration for your own garden or simply to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere that each place exhibits.  

South Hams  

Avon Mill Garden Centre, Loddiswell 

Located on the banks of the River Avon, Avon Mill Garden Centre is a wonderful, independently-owned plant nursery. The centre is complete with a lovely café with both indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a number of independent shops selling various crafts, clothing and homeware.  

Noyces, Kingsbridge 

Situated just outside of Kingsbridge at Bowcombe, Noyces is a wonderful complex comprised of two stores – the garden centre and a homeware store. Selling cookware, gardening tools, DIY supplies and more, it’s got all the home and garden essentials you’ll need!   

Green Garden Spaces, Stokenham 

Located at Stokely Farm Shop in Stokenham and close to Torcross, Green Garden Spaces is a unique and independent plant shop situated inside a shipping container! They sell a range of seasonal plants, compost, seeds, wildlife care and garden accessories.  

Endsleigh Garden Centre, Ivybridge 

Conveniently situated just off the A38 in Ivybridge, Endsleigh, owned by Blue Diamond, is a large garden centre and café that sells a variety of indoor and outdoor plants, plus homeware, clothing, books and more! 

Longcome Cross Garden Centre, Totnes 

Longcome Cross Garden Centre is located on the main road between Totnes and Paignton. Offering a variety of indoor and outdoor plants, plus gardening tools and materials, it also boasts a café and a children’s soft play area.  

The Potting Bench, Totnes 

The Potting Shed is a small but mighty plant shop in the heart of Totnes. Situated on the high street, it’s somewhat of a TARDIS – it looks much bigger on the inside! They sell a variety of house plants, but also boast a number of outdoor plants, pots, compost, seeds and also some lovely gifts.   

Otter Garden Centre, Brixton 

Otter own a number of garden centres in Devon and the South West; their Plymouth complex sits just outside of the city in the quaint village of Brixton. It’s a large centre consisting of a number of outdoor and house plants, and sells plenty of garden tools, materials, equipment and furniture.  

Fordbrook Nurseries, Brixton 

Family-run and located close to Otter Garden Centre in Brixton, Fordbrook is an independent nursery that overlooks a flowing brook in the South Hams countryside. Offering quality and affordable plants, they grow a range of shrubs, perennials, hanging baskets and more.  

Gardentime, Dartmouth 

Situated en-route to Dartmouth from Totnes, Gardentime is a wonderful independently owned garden centre, café and farm shop. They have a great selections of house plants, succulents and outdoor greenery.  

South Milton Nursery, South Milton 

South Milton Nursery, also known as South Milton Flower Farm are a small, sustainable flower farm, who grow their plants organically – using no pesticides and endeavour to use no-dig methods to preserve the soil health. Be sure to check their website before visiting as they often have appointment-only openings.   

Growers Organic, Yealmpton 

Growing and specialising in certified organic plants in the heart of the South Devon countryside, Growers Organic is situated in Yealmpton. You can find them on the same site as Ben’s Farm Shop and Pip’s Pick Your Own on Kitley Farm.  

Sunridge Nurseries, Yealmpton 

Nestled in the Yealm Valley and close to the town of Yealmpton in the South Hams, Sunridge Nurseries are a delightful, family-owned nursery selling a variety of garden plants.  

Plymouth 

Plymouth Garden Centre, Plymouth 

Located just a few minutes from the Devon Expressway in Plymouth, Plymouth Garden Centre is a large complex that specialise in plants, aquatics, furniture, pet care and more! They also boast a café, plus clothing and gift sections.  

Plants Galore, Plympton 

Plants Galore pride themselves on being the South West’s largest garden plant supermarket. Situated close to the new town of Sherford and Plympton and on the outskirts of Plymouth, this store is close to the Devon Expressway for easy access.  

Bud Houseplant, Plymouth  

Situated centrally in Plymouth, close to Home Park Stadium, Bud Houseplants are a small but award-winning business with a large selection of indoor plants, pots and baskets. Whilst they aren’t specifically a garden centre, they do sell a fantastic range of plants and certainly deserve a mention! 

Teignbridge 

Jack’s Patch - Otter Garden Centre, Bishopsteignton 

Jack’s Patch is the newest Otter Garden Centre, joining the family in 2019. It’s located on the main road between Teignmouth and Newton Abbot in the small village of Bishopsteignton. They have a number of great facilities including a large coffee shop and sell a variety of plants, homeware and clothing.  

Fermoys Garden Centre, Ipplepen 

Also owned by Blue Diamond, Fermoys is a complex selling various gardening products, homeware, plats and pet care. It also boasts a café, a deli and it’s also home to the Bird of Prey Sanctuary. 

Plant World Nursery & Gardens, Newton Abbot 

Situated between Newton Abbot and Torquay, Plant World is a garden centre and attraction, home to countless rare and exotic plants. The outdoor attraction is designed to map out 5 continents and the plants that live there; plus, they also boast a shop and café.   

Trago Mills, Newton Abbot 

Trago Mills is a one-stop-shop for everything – it’s the only place you can go to pick up a bush for your garden, a guitar, a new carpet and a guinea pig, all under one roof! Their garden park is one of the biggest in the South West with 12 show gardens.  

Plants Galore, Newton Abbot 

Plants Galore’s Newton Abbot centre is situated on the outskirts of the town and close to the A38 and Trago Mills. They sell a huge variety of outdoor plants, as well as seeds, tools and compost.  

Burnham Nurseries, Newton Abbot 

On the same road as Plants Galore, you’ll also find Burnham Nurseries, a nursery that has been running since 1949! They have the largest selection of orchid species and hybrids in the UK and are incredibly passionate about this particular breed of plant. Make a day of it and enjoy a light bite or sweet treat if their Café Vanilla, or take part in an Orchid Masterclass to learn about how to look after these unique plants.  

Hill House Nursery, Landscove 

Situated between Ashburton and Staverton, Hill House Nursery are an independent garden centre surrounded by South Devon countryside. Alongside their garden centre, they boast a tearoom serving freshly prepared and locally sourced treats.  

English Riviera 

Otter Garden Centre, Marldon 

Torbay’s Otter Garden Centre sits close to the A380 Devon Expressway, just outside of the village of Marldon. They sell a range or garden equipment and furniture, as well as a variety of plants and also have a café.  

Mid Devon 

Homeleigh Garden Centre, Crediton 

Homeleigh in Crediton is a large garden centre who not only offer garden plants and equipment, but they also have an aquatics centre and a pet shop, as well as selling clothing, gifts and homeware. 

Withleigh Nurseries, Tiverton 

Located to the west of Tiverton, Withleigh Nurseries are a traditional, family-run nursery and vegetarian café. The nursery grows a wide range of interesting and unusual plants as well as the old favourites, always offering excellent value for money. 

Cove Garden Centre, Tiverton 

Family-run and set in the Exe Valley, Cove Garden Centre is a lovely 5-acre nursery filled with an array of plants and gardening products. Located north of Tiverton, it’s close to Exmoor National Park and boasts a craft studio and has a resident cat, Tom, who loves to munch on cat mint!  

Bow Garden & Aquatic Centre, Bow 

Located between Crediton and North Tawton, Bow Garden & Aquatic Centre specialises in gardening, aquatics, pets and wildlife. They also stock a range of gifts, homeware and boasts a stunning waterside café, serving food made from fresh, local produce.  

The Old Well Garden Centre, Cullompton 

The Old Well Garden Centre is a family-run garden centre that sell a range of plants and garden sundries. They have an on-site restaurant and coffee bar serving delicious homemade food and drinks.  

East Devon 

Greenfingers Garden Centre, Exmouth 

Situated in the Withycombe Raleigh borough of Exmouth, Greenfingers Garden Centre sell a wide selection of gardening sundries and plant care equipment. They’re a family-run and independent centre with an onsite café, Arc Kitchen and Coffee House.  

Kings Garden & Leisure, Exmouth  

Situated outside of Exmouth town centre, Kings Garden & Leisure are a family-run and independent garden centre with everything you’ll need to create your dream garden and home. They also boast a café-restaurant and an outdoor seating area suitable for dogs.  

Kings Garden & Leisure, Sidmouth 

Kings Garden & Leisure boast a second complex between Sidbury and Sidmouth, in the East Devon countryside. 

Otter Garden Centre, Ottery St Mary 

This Ottery St Mary Garden Centre was the first Otter Garden Centre to be established in the 1960s. It’s easily accessed from the A30 and it’s the largest of all the Otter centres. Inside you can buy a range of goods from plants and clothing to toys, pet care and more! 

Devon Violet Nursery, Ottery St Mary 

Devon Violet is a family-run nursery in Ottery St Mary who are dedicated to growing a variety of violets. They’re one of only the few nurseries in the country who specialise in growing sweet violets!   

The Garden Shop, Colyton 

The Garden Shop is a lovely, independent garden centre in Colyton and sits close to the Seaton Tramway station! Open daily, they stock everything you might need for your garden, as well as a large variety of house plants. They have a dog-friendly café and plenty of outdoor seating for enjoying the sun.  

Piccolo Plants Nursery, Branscombe 

If succulents are your plant of choice, be sure to check out Piccolo Plant Nursey! Located in the idyllic village of Branscombe, Piccolo Plants specialise in succulents and grow a huge variety of indoor and outdoor ones, but be sure to contact them in advance to see the nursery. 

Combe Garden Centre, Honiton 

Located on the A30, just outside Honiton, Combe Garden Centre consists of a fantastic nursery, stocking seasonal plants, a lifestyle store called Velvet & Parade and an artisanal café called The Kitchen, offering home cooked, locally sourced food.  

Honiton Garden Centre & Café, Honiton 

Conveniently located on the A35 and just a few minutes away from the town centre, Honiton Garden Centre & Café is a rural centre, set in the East Devon National Landscape. They offer a wide range of gardening and garden products and boast a bright and airy café with plenty of outdoor seating. 

West Devon 

Long Ash Garden Centre, Yelverton 

Located on the edge of Dartmoor National Park between Yelverton and Tavistock, Long Ash Garden Centre is an independent garden centre and tearoom that sells a variety of seasonal plants and goods.  

E.B. Champernowne, Yelverton 

Another nursery located near Yelverton is E.B. Champernowne, a wholesale nursery on the edge of Dartmoor. They propagate over 90% of their stock which enables them to offer a wide range of rare and unusual plants and reduces the risk and cost involved in transporting, they are then able to pass these savings onto their customers.  

Country Lanes Garden Centre, Okehampton 

Country Lanes Garden Centre is located just off the Okehampton Bypass on the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park. They sell a variety of plants and plant accessories and are also home to a restaurant which serves food using local produce and suppliers.  

Exeter 

St Bridget Nurseries, Clyst St Mary 

Independently run for over 95 years, St Bridget is a family-owned garden centre who specialise in plants and gardening, aquatics such as ponds and aquariums, and also sell a range of wonderful gifts. They also boast a wonderful café serving breakfast, lunch, cakes and coffee.  

Bernaville Nurseries, Cowley 

Bernaville is a family-run nursery for over 65 years, located in Cowley near Exeter. Their garden centre boasts a café, and they sell a range of indoor and outdoor plants, materials and accessories. 

Orchard Nurseries, Ide 

Owned by Barletts Country Stores, Orchard Nurseries is located on the A30, close to Ide and Tedburn St Mary, just outside of Exeter. They stock a range of plants and gardening products, but also equine accessories, pet care and more!  

Frenchs Teign Valley Nursery, Bridford 

Located on the north-eastern edge of Dartmoor National Park between Moretonhampstead and Exeter, Frenchs Teign Valley Nursery are a traditional family-run nursery, specialising in hardy garden plants, vegetables and patio plants. They also stock a wide range of garden supplies, animal feed and local produce.  

Plants Galore, Exeter 

Plants Galore in Exeter is situated between Exeter and Topsham in East Devon, close to the A38 and the M5.  

Urban & Rural Plants, Matford & Powderham  

With two located close to Exeter, one at Matford and one on the Powderham Estate in Kenton, Urban & Rural Plants are a trade nursery that’s also open to the public. They specialise in architectural plants and stock a wide range of palms, olive trees, succulents, cacti, herbs and more.
