The first ever South Devon Sea Shanty Festival takes place this summer on the 6th and 7th July. Visitors to Dartmouth and Teignmouth will be able to enjoy these rousing and entertaining traditional maritime work songs being performed against the backdrop of beautiful seaside locations.
The festival will be taking place on the 6th of July in Dartmouth and the 7th of July in Teignmouth between 11am and 4pm.
In Dartmouth performances will be staged on the Bandstand in Royal Avenue Gardens, at The Royal Castle Hotel and onboard some of the wonderful river cruises run by The Dartmouth Steam Railway and Riverboat Company.
Performances in Teignmouth will take place throughout the day at The Triangle, outside The Ship Inn on the back beach, within the Oystercatcher Cafe and the Riviera Cafe Bar on the seafront.
Crews performing at the Festival are Exmouth Shanty Men, Falmouth Shout, Flash Jack, Mariners Away, Stamp & Go, Tavy Tars, The Nauti Buoys and the Wareham Whalers.
The Festival in Dartmouth coincides with the Dartmouth Classics Weekend, which brings together the opening weekend of the Classic Channel Regatta and the Old Gaffers Association Annual Race. The weekend’s sailing will start at 10.30 on the 6th July with a parade of sail of all the competing boats, around 100, out of Dartmouth harbour. Performances from the crews will accompany this visually wonderful parade as it leaves the town.
These engaging performances will be open to all and free to attend and will be taking place in both outdoor and indoor venues.
