Enjoy holidays like they used to be in one our five comfy dog-friendly  historic cottages. Each cottage is part of an 18thC watermill or a mill worker’s cottage with a shallow trout stream to play in set in 20 acres of beautiful coastal valley between Slapton & Strete in the heart of an Area of |Outstanding Natural Beauty. Close to Start Bay, beaches, pretty villages, Dartmouth & The Coast Path.

A haven of peace and tranquillity almost untouched by the modern world - woods, meadows, private gardens, shared lawns, undisturbed water meadows, orchard & stream.. No through traffic, it’s a green lane beyond us.

A 24-hour wildlife channel outside your window, green lane walks from your cottage door. Great birdwatching & star-gazing – no light pollution.

We welcome dogs and are flexible on number. 

Reconnect with nature and each other, away from the white noise of TV, wifi and mobiles - there is a landline in the office and mobile reception up the lane. Groups welcome, the cottages are perfect for larger groups of family and friends.

Free electric car charging using electricity generated by our water turbine.

We raise ducks, hens, sheep and cows (and welcome help with feeding), press apples for cider, and offer homegrown meat, eggs & veg to guests.

There’s plenty of parking.   All cottages have log burners, electric radiators and heaters so are cosy all year round.  All logs are included.  Short breaks available all year outside school holidays, two nights or more.  Call Christine and John on 01803 770219 or email christine@watermillcottages.co.uk.  We look forward to welcoming you!

Barleycorn Cottage: sleeps 2-4 (1 double, 1 twin, space for extra beds)
Rose Cottage: sleeps 2-4 (1 double + ensuite, 1 twin + ensuite)
Mill Cottage: sleeps 2-6 (1 double, I twin or single + cot), 1 kids’ bunk bed room)
Crownwheel Cottage: sleeps 2-6/8 (1 double, I twin + ensuite, 1 full size bunk bed room; space for extra beds)

Road Directions

From Slapton take the Totnes road to Totnes. Half a mile from Slapton, turn right at Start Bay Centre, part of Slapton Ley Field Centre (an old school), signposted to Merrifield. Drive for about a mile. At the T junction at the end of the lane, with the house called Merrifield in front of you, turn right. Follow this lane as it bends, narrows and dips. You will pass Hansel Cottage and the walls of Hansel hamlet to reach us. Higher North Mill and Watermill Cottages are at the bottom of the hill, by the stream, and a mile from the No Through Road sign at Merrifield.
