Guest Blog Post - Salcombe Crabfest

Salcombe Crab Festival - or Crabfest - returns on Sunday 5 May and promises another cracking line-up of chef demos, live music, exhibits and fun activities.

The family-friendly festival is organised by the Rotary Club of Salcombe and sponsored by Coast and Country Cottages, Crew Clothing Co. and Salcombe Gin. Entry is free and funds raised by the festival are donated to local charities and good causes. This year’s principal charity is the Triangle Drop In Cancer Support Centre in Kingsbridge.

Visitors to Crabfest will find a vibrant marketplace of colourful pop-up stalls offering top quality food and drink, clothing, gifts and activities, stretching from Creek Car Park along Island Street to Whitestrand. Keep your eyes peeled for special offers and competitions exclusive to Crabfest visitors. Visit the Crew Clothing stall for a chance to ‘putt for a polo shirt’ in their mini golf competition and pick up a scratchcard to reveal a store voucher up to the value of £100.

Families with young children will find a range of fun activities awaiting them at the Coast and Country Cottages stand. And don’t forget to enter the 2019 Salcombe Crab Festival competition while you’re there!

There will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy the unique taste of Salcombe crab. Look out for it on pub and restaurant menus, get your claws into a succulent crab sandwich, try a posh crab pasty or pick up a couple of live crabs to cook at home. Local crab and lobster fishermen will be welcoming visitors aboard their boats at Creek Car Park and Normandy Pontoon giving visitors a chance to find out more about the local fishing industry and take a closer look at some of our local sealife. The popular Chefs’ Demonstration Tent features an exciting mix of celebrity chefs and talented local stars who will be showcasing a selection of their favourite seafood recipes and passing on their top tips. Highlights include Saturday Kitchen’s Matt Tebbutt, Jack Stein (The Seahorse) and Jane Baxter (Wild Artichokes).

There will be tasters to try at the end of each demo and Salcombe Gin will be on hand with some innovative gin cocktail pairings.

This year the Chefs’ Demo Tent will also host a crab picking masterclass followed by a crab picking contest, organised by Salcombe Holiday Homes. Expect things to get messy as this year’s chefs battle it out with mallet and pick to see who can extract the most crab meat, with the least shell, in the quickest time.

All this plus lots of fantastic live music acts playing across five different stages throughout the day.

Getting there couldn’t be easier with a special park and ride bus service that drops festival-goers at the heart of the festival. Or hop aboard The Rivermaid at Kingsbridge and start your Crabfest experience with a scenic ferry ride to Salcombe.

This year, in association with Crabfest, three special fundraising events are taking place at local venues ahead of the Festival. On Friday 3 May, The Wardroom in Salcombe is hosting a five course fine dining menu by South West Chef of the Year, Jamie Rogers of Twenty_seven, and Salcombe Harbour Hotel will host a BBQ dinner with entertainment. On Saturday 4 May a luxury afternoon BBQ by Freddy Bird will take place at Gara Rock.

What better way to kick off a cracking Crabfest weekend?
