Craft Festival Bovey Tracey Returns and is Celebrating 22 Years this June.
June always brings something special to look forward to; warmer, longer days, and a weekend celebrating craft, creativity, and community in the beautiful Devon countryside. Craft Festival Bovey Tracey celebrates 22 years and runs from Friday 12 – Sunday 14 June.
Mill Marsh Park in Bovey Tracey will once again transform into something magical; a vibrant village of marquees, makers, music, and making. For many, the pilgrimage to Bovey for Craft Festival is an annual treat that cannot be missed. The welcoming atmosphere, the anticipation of seeing something new and the gathering of like-minded friends is irresistible.
At the heart of the event are around 200 exceptional designer-makers. Makers travel from all corners of the UK, reflecting the festival’s national appeal and importance to the craft loving audience.
Gilly Langton, a jeweller who travels from Plockton in Scotland, explains why she makes the trek to Bovey:
“Craft Festival is not just a craft fair, it celebrates craft and all its disciplines with such joy, it truly is a festival. From makers and workshops to demonstrations, there is so much to see and do. Presenting my collection of colourful contemporary jewellery to customers old andnew over the past 20 years has been a delight. It’s so worth the 2-day train journey!”
Visitors can expect an inspiring mix of ceramics, jewellery, textiles, glass, metal, printmaking, furniture and more from nationally recognised names to exciting emerging talent, including many makers from Devon and the Southwest.
Craft Festival is about more than shopping, it’s about getting hands-on, feeling inspired and being involved. Across the weekend, adults can join creative workshops led by professional makers and try their hand at wood carving, broom making, stitching, natural dyeing, marbling, and stone carving. Enjoying 2 hours of making and learning a new skill, is an important part of the Craft Festival experience. Tickets for workshops can be found here.
For younger visitors, the much-loved Children’s Craft Club offers a lively programme of free, drop-in activities in partnership with Bovey based educational charity, MAKE Southwest. It’s a space buzzing with imagination, colour, and creativity.
Families can also enjoy storytelling, Punch and Judy, circus skills, street theatre and walkabout performances with Jonty Depp and Kitsch n Sync Theatre Company.
Long time event partners, Heritage Crafts will be expanding on their popular talks programme whilst highlighting a range of heritage creatives. Their Red List makers will be sharing their stories and there is the chance to hear acclaimed author, Dr James Fox talk about his new book, Craft Land.
Craft is continually brought to life across the weekend with demonstrations by a range of makers including printmaker, Lou Tonkin, woodcarver William Barsley, blacksmith Angus Wood and much more.
A festival favourite is the Out of the Woods tent, featuring a mix of makers that honour our native woodlands in wood, paper, willow, and clay. Out of the Woods will feature daily demonstrations and an opportunity to sit, watch, and talk about making. Alex Finberg, spoon carver and curator of Out of the Woods, says,
“This is a unique opportunity to see some of the Southwest's finest makers in their element. From woodturning to pottery, our collective is bound by a deep inspiration from the woodlands and heritage of the Westcountry. The demonstrations are an invitation to engage with the authentic stories and landscapes behind the craft. It’s a must-visit for anyone who values the beauty of handmade work."
The renowned Craft Cinema takes place at Sol Cinema, a mobile outdoor movie theatre set inside a vintage caravan. Fully solar-powered and blending film with performance art, it offers guests the chance to relax and enjoy short films focused on creators and craftsmanship.
Craft Festival also brings brilliant, locally sourced street food, from wood-fired pizza and vegan burgers to Caribbean flavours, tasty Thai and toasties to fresh salads and irresistible ice cream.
For those wishing to start their day in quiet meditation and movement, Anna White of Pretzel Yoga Studio will host well-being morning yoga in the park.
Set on the edge of Dartmoor, surrounded by parkland and alive with creativity, Craft Festival Bovey Tracey is more than an event, it is a summer highlight, a creative gathering, and a celebration of making in all its forms.
