If you’ve ever wandered beneath the towering trees, cycled along winding trails, or watched your little ones let their imaginations run wild in the play areas, you’ll know there’s something special about Haldon Forest Park. This year, one of South Devon’s best-loved outdoor destinations celebrates a milestone - 20 years since opening its doors as a fully accessible forest park.
From quiet woodland to thriving outdoor hub
While Forestry England has cared for Haldon Forest for more than a century, the park as we know it today officially opened on 15 April 2006. Back then, thanks to funding from Active England, the vision was simple but powerful: make the forest a place where more people could get active and reconnect with nature.
Before that transformation, just a few thousand people visited each year. Fast forward to today, and the forest welcomes around 500,000 visitors annually - drawn by everything from peaceful woodland walks to high-energy outdoor adventures.
A place for everyone to enjoy nature
Over the past two decades, Haldon Forest Park has grown into a space that truly lives up to the idea that the outdoors is for everyone. Thoughtful improvements have made a real difference - think wide, well-surfaced trails, plenty of seating spots to pause and take in the views, and a mobility hire service that opens up the forest to even more visitors.
Whether you’re visiting solo for some headspace, planning a family day out, or looking for something a little more adrenaline-fuelled, there’s plenty to explore:
-
Miles of walking, cycling and horse-riding trails
-
Dedicated running routes
-
Tree-top adventures and high ropes
-
Wildlife watching opportunities
-
Children’s play areas and seasonal activities
It’s not just about fun, either. Spending time in nature has been shown time and again to support mental wellbeing, and Haldon offers the perfect setting to slow down, breathe deeply and recharge.
Celebrating 20 years—and looking ahead
Park Manager Ros Lamble reflects on the journey:
“We’re incredibly proud to reach our 20th anniversary and celebrate two decades of creating unforgettable memories for our visitors. I can’t wait to celebrate with our visitors throughout 2026 and continue this wonderful journey together.”
Over the last 20 years, Haldon has helped more people than ever discover the beauty of Devon’s countryside and create lasting memories outdoors. And this anniversary isn’t just about looking back, it’s about celebrating with visitors throughout 2026 and continuing to grow what the forest has to offer.
Plan your visit
Whether it’s your first time or your fiftieth, there’s never been a better moment to experience Haldon Forest Park. Pack a picnic, bring your walking shoes (or your bike), and come and see why this woodland escape has captured hearts for two decades.
Here’s to the next 20 years of fresh air, forest adventures and unforgettable days out in South Devon!
