Bigbury-On-Sea Beach, situated along the stunning South Devon coastline and within the South Devon National Landscape (previously AONB), stands as a testament to the region's natural beauty. Providing visitors with a picturesque destination for relaxation and recreation, this sandy beach, flanked by rolling hills and framed by the iconic Burgh Island, offers a unique and memorable seaside experience.

One of the distinctive features of Bigbury-On-Sea Beach is the tidal causeway that connects the mainland to Burgh Island. At low tide, visitors can walk across the sandy pathway, immersing themselves in the tranquil surroundings and enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding coastline. As the tide rolls in, the sea covers the causeway, creating a sense of isolation for those on Burgh Island, accessible only by sea tractor or boat. It also boasts an award-winning hotel, elegant and rather genteel; it’s an ideal romantic retreat for couples.

The beach itself boasts golden sands and clear waters, making it an ideal spot for families, sun-seekers, and water enthusiasts. The gently sloping shoreline provides safe and shallow waters for paddling and swimming, making it suitable for visitors of all ages. Lifeguards are often present during peak times in the summer, ensuring a safe environment for beachgoers.

For water sports enthusiasts, Bigbury-On-Sea Beach offers fantastic opportunities for windsurfing and paddleboarding. The consistent breeze and relatively calm waters make it an excellent location for beginners and experienced water sports enthusiasts alike. Rental facilities are available for those looking to try their hand at these exciting activities.

Surrounded by stunning cliffs and greenery, the beach is also a great starting point for coastal walks, providing breathtaking views of the English Channel and the rugged coastline. Birdwatchers can revel in the diverse avian life that frequents the area, adding to the overall natural charm of the beach.

Additionally, amenities and facilities around Bigbury-On-Sea Beach cater to the needs of visitors. A beachside cafe, Venus Cafe, provides a delightful spot to grab organic refreshments and take in the scenery. Public toilets and parking facilities are conveniently located, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable day at the beach.

Dogs are welcome on the main beach from October to May, but the beach to the west of the causeway welcomes dogs throughout the year so your four-legged friends can enjoy your beach days with you!

Bigbury-On-Sea Beach stands as a jewel in South Devon's coastal crown, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and a touch of historical intrigue with the iconic Burgh Island. Whether seeking relaxation, water sports, or scenic walks, visitors to this beach will find themselves captivated by its charm and the surrounding coastal splendour.

Nice sandy beach as long as it isn’t high tide when there isn’t much beach. Large car park and we didn’t have trouble paying for the car park. Cafe seemed expensive but everyone enjoyed their food... Read full review
