Guest Blog Post - Kitley House Hotel & Restaurant

South Devon is often praised as the ‘jewel in Devon’s crown’. Rightly so, in our view.

The south of our beautiful county is certainly blessed with its fair share of natural and manmade treasures - golden sandy beaches, sparkling seascapes and sites with glints of history. Now another gem has been revealed… a hidden one!

Kitley House Hotel & Restaurant, in the South Hams near Plymouth, is delighted to have won the accolade Hidden Gem of the Year in this year’s prestigious LUX Life Magazine Hotel & Spa Awards.

These annual awards celebrate the best in luxury hospitality worldwide, so winning this particular accolade is quite a coup for a 19-bedroom establishment which has been under new ownership since last summer. If you’ve already visited Kitley, you’ll know that the historic former manor house sits in splendid seclusion on a 600-acre country estate, beside the tranquil Yealm estuary.

The modest gatehouse entrance on the A379, just outside Yealmpton, belies the ‘hidden gem’ that awaits you at the end of the long drive.

In the last year, Grade-I-listed Kitley House, now a hotel, restaurant, events and wedding venue, has undergone quite a makeover. As a result of a sympathetic programme of renovation and refurbishment, its elegant reception rooms have been transformed.

Modern facilities now quietly complement the building’s stunning period features, including a grand staircase, original panelling and tall windows affording far-reaching views. In the colder months, a welcoming open fire greets you in the reception hall - matched by an equally warm and friendly welcome from the staff.Kitley’s grounds are a gem for nature lovers too with gardens, pasture and ancient woodland to explore. Perfect if you want to take a canine companion along to make the most of your visit.

The hotel reception, bar and grounds have always welcomed four-legged friends. Following feedback from guests, the hotel has recently opened up four of its Classic bedrooms as dog-friendly accommodation for those wishing to bring a well-behaved pet to stay.

Canine companions enjoy the same level of comfort and luxury as their owners. They are provided with a comfy blanket, a bowl and a tasty treat to settle them in.

As the autumn mists begin to settle over South Devon’s lovely landscapes, it’s a perfect time to discover this ‘official’ Hidden Gem - described as exactly that on Kitley’s brand new website.

So, if you haven’t visited before, do venture down the driveway to explore all that’s on offer.
