I recently visited, and I know that South Devon is popular for its endless drink options and stunning coastline beaches, but let's talk about the A-list food options available there. Offering a boundless array of flavors, this became a gourmet journey instead of an adventurous one for me.
I have heard hymns of praise about it, but whatever I have listened to seems less than what I have experienced. Honestly, I have never thought about starting my own food business, but I want to get caravan insurance, just by the beach, to sell delectable food and live like the people of South Devon. No other history and culture has appealed to me as much as that of South Devon. I sound like a silly tourist, but I am considering it as a business idea or an early retirement plan.
Whether it's business or not, South Devon’s food needs to be appreciated more, so here I am with a full article on the subject. From shore to cream, South Devon’s undefeated food game is straight-up elite.
Top 5 Must-Eat Delights From South Devon
- Seafood
I am a big fan of sweet and delicate meat; however, seafood has always been off my radar. However, I thought of rebranding my taste buds since the seafood of South Devon looked irresistibly addictive.
I have still not been able to put my finger on it, but there has to be some kind of sorcery at work. Suggested by locals, I approached this dish with cautious anticipation. On the menu, I had scallops, mussels, oysters, and almost all kinds of sea fish. Astonished by the crunch of grilled mackerel, I saw my friend devour over rockfish after all the name of the restaurant was Rockfish, so how could I not? Watching him relish it stirred my curiosity, and I tried it too.
Stunned by the flavours, I wondered how a fish named rockfish could be so soft and juicy. It melted in my mouth within seconds, and I was convinced to try them out more.
My friends who know how much I hate seafood eyed me while I got my second, third, and even fourth batches for some. I want to say to my fellow seafood skeptics that do not limit yourself and try it out. You can also try out seafood sandwiches, which are another genre on their own that deserves more hype.
- Homemade Bakery
In today's time, I see a lot of recognition for homemade foods, and honestly, I have no complaints. I have been so indulged in making homemade bakery of my own that it has been a long time since I tried out bakery from anywhere else.
I mean, bakery everywhere has to be the same, and no matter how fresh they advertise it to be, I know nothing can beat my homemade bakery. However, I saw a kid enjoy fresh pastries from Fuller’s Pasties & Bakery. Usually, I do not get tempted to try out a bakery, but I thought, why not give it a try? To this day, I thank my stars that I tried it because I have not tasted anything that rivals this level of excellence.
I was so mesmerized by the pastry that I also got a cherry almond flapjack and freshly baked croissants. South Devon’s fresh bakery set a new standard for me, which is very rare. As a bakery fanatic and a proud one, I have to surrender my crown to South Devon, as they caught me off guard and exceeded my expectations.
- Devon Ice Cream
My friends who have visited South Devon earlier told me that it's a tradition to try out South Devon Ice Cream. I thought it was childish of them to be excited about trying out Ice cream. However, after tasting just one scoop of The Devon Ice Cream, I became a child again. The experience I had cannot be replicated. This exquisite ice cream is made locally with local cream and dairy. Trust me, it has this authenticity that a commercial business could never match. Additionally, they offer award-winning ice creams and sorbets, so be sure to try them out.
I tried out the most basic strawberry ice cream; however, there was nothing basic about this. The strawberry jam was made locally and tasted like something I have never had before. However, it tasted like a Michelin-star restaurant would serve, but the catch was that it was easily accessible just around the corner.
- Devon Cream Tea
Another taboo was broken when I tried out Devonshire cream tea from The Cafe On The Green. I always believed that coffee tasted better than tea, but that changed once I tried out Devon's cream tea. The locals told me that this tea is a big part of their history.
In the 11th century, it was part of their tradition to serve bread, jam, and cream with tea. Now, in modern times, it has become scones and clotted cream. It's times like these when I don't complain about contemporary times, because scones are the icing on the cake for this one.
Since I was not open-minded to this dish, one sip of it left me flabbergasted. This quintessential indulgence did hurt my pride, but I would try this over coffee any day now. The clotted cream with tea made up of local milk, and once again, the fresh bakery was a chef’s kiss.
- Devon Cider
Finally, how can I not mention Devon cider? It is a part of their rich culture and heritage. I like to describe Devon Cider as my personality. It is bold, strong, and fun, yet it has a hint of sunshine to it. It sounds like an impossible combination, but wait until you try it out. I tried out Devon Cider from Heron Valley, because they have award-winning Devon Cider, and after a sip, I can vouch for it.
The flavours of Devon Cider that I tried are not overly sweet; however, there are plenty of options to choose from. The best thing is that it is alcohol, which does not taste like alcohol but more like fresh fruits. By the taste of it, I already knew that it was made in an old-school way, but who would want a contemporary drink with Devon Cider in sight?
Conclusion
Serving delicious food is right up the sleeve at South Devon. I love how every bite has a story to tell. Although my palate approached all of these food items with hesitation, I am glad that my curiosity did not get the best of me. Defining cheap with a depth of flavor, nothing comes close to matching its caliber.
I'm sold on trying everything from South Devon, and mark my words, your taste buds will thank you for doing so. Go to South Devon right away, and try everything I suggested and more. I am sure you will return delighted with a wealth of local stories to pass down to your grandchildren. I have even started recreating some of their dishes on my own, but how successful I am in making them is a story for another day.
