South Hams

Stretching across a beautiful corner of South Devon, the South Hams is known for its rolling countryside, historic towns and spectacular coastline. Much of the area lies within the South Devon National Landscape (formerly known as Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), where patchwork farmland meets sheltered estuaries, sandy coves and dramatic coastal cliffs.

From the lively harbour towns of Dartmouth and Salcombe to peaceful villages tucked into wooded valleys, the South Hams offers a landscape that feels both timeless and varied. Inland, the countryside gradually rises towards the edge of Dartmoor, while along the coast the South West Coast Path reveals sweeping sea views and hidden beaches waiting to be discovered.

The region has long been shaped by both farming and the sea, and that balance is still very much part of its character today. Fishing boats share the water with sailing yachts, local markets showcase seasonal produce from nearby farms, and historic towns continue to thrive as welcoming places to explore.

History

The history of the South Hams stretches back many centuries, with settlements in the area dating to Anglo-Saxon times. During the medieval period, wool production became a major industry, helping many inland towns and villages to prosper.

Along the coast, sheltered estuaries created ideal natural harbours, allowing ports such as Dartmouth to develop into important trading centres. Maritime connections have played a significant role in shaping the region ever since, with strong links to naval history and seafaring traditions.

Today, traces of this long history can still be seen throughout the South Hams. Historic castles, ancient churches, traditional market towns and working waterfronts all offer a glimpse into the area’s past while continuing to play a role in everyday life.

Things to Do in the South Hams

The South Hams is an ideal destination for anyone who enjoys spending time outdoors. With rivers, estuaries, open countryside and miles of coastline to explore, there are endless opportunities to get out and experience the landscape.

Walking is one of the best ways to discover the area, whether following a section of the South West Coast Path or exploring quieter inland trails through farmland and woodland. Seafood is a particular highlight, with coastal towns such as Dartmouth and Salcombe known for their excellent restaurants serving fish and shellfish landed nearby. Inland, traditional pubs and independent eateries showcase the best of Devon produce, from locally reared meats to seasonal vegetables and artisan cheeses.
