With its renowned estate, creative community and rich heritage, Dartington is a must-visit destination for those seeking a blend of history, culture and nature.

History

Dartington’s history is deeply rooted in its iconic Dartington Hall, a medieval estate dating back to the 14th century. The estate was revitalised in the 1920s by Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst, who transformed it into a centre for innovation in the arts, education and social enterprise. Today, Dartington Hall remains a hub for creative and sustainable living, continuing the Elmhirsts' legacy. The village itself has grown around this historic centre, maintaining its rural charm and cultural significance.

Things to Do

Dartington offers a plethora of activities for visitors. Explore the expansive Dartington Hall Estate, where you can wander through beautiful gardens, discover historic buildings, and enjoy scenic walks along the River Dart. Aside from that, outdoor lovers can enjoy walking or cycling in the surrounding countryside, with easy access to the Dart Valley Trail and South Devon National Landscape

Events

Throughout the year, Dartington hosts a variety of events that celebrate its artistic and cultural heritage. The Dartington International Summer School and Festival is a highlight, attracting musicians and artists from around the world for a series of workshops and concerts. Other events include film screenings at the cinema, literary festivals, craft fairs and seasonal celebrations. These events foster a sense of community and creativity, drawing visitors to Dartington from near and far.

Dartington boasts a selection of delightful cafés, restaurants and pubs that offer a taste of Devon's finest produce. The pubs provide a cosy setting to enjoy locally sourced meals and traditional pub fare. For a more casual experience, the cafés here serve delicious, sustainable food with a focus on organic ingredients.
