The Mercy, starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz was filmed in Teignmouth, South Devon in June 2015 and is due for release on the 9th February 2018.
Directed by James Marsh, whose last work was the Oscar winning ‘The Theory of Everything’, tells the fascinating story of doomed yachtsman Donald Crowhurst. In 1969 Crowhurst, an amateur sailor, set sail from Teignmouth in his trimaran the Teignmouth Electron as part of the Golden Globe race.
Due to his lack of experience he made slow progress and decided to falsify his progress in the race, leading to those at home believing he was winning the race. His boat was eventually discovered floating unmanned and Crowhurst was never found. His logbook, written during his time on board, suggested that his mind became unravelled and it is assumed he drowned himself.
June 2015 saw the beautiful South Devon town of Teignmouth being taken back in time to the 60’s with many of the locals taking the parts of extras in the movie.
Here are some pictures of the film being made in Teignmouth.
