Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life is a treasure trove of fascinating objects, quirky artefacts and incredible stories about the people who have shaped Mid Devon. Step inside and you might be surprised by just how much there is to discover! Often described as a bit like a Tardis, the museum is packed with an eclectic mix of collections exploring the area's rich history, from everyday home life to the industries that helped put Tiverton on the map.
Discover how people lived, worked and played through the centuries, explore the history of local trades and industries, and find out how the wool trade and John Heathcoat's lace-making factory helped transform the town. You'll also find brewing and local shops, toys and domestic objects, alongside an impressive collection of farming implements and one of the finest collections of farm carts and wagons around. Explore Mid Devon's wartime history before heading into the transport gallery, where you can follow the story of local roads, the Grand Western Canal and the railway. The star of the show is GWR steam engine 1442, affectionately known as the 'Tivvy Bumper' – and you can even climb aboard and stand on its footplate!
There's plenty to make a visit fun for younger explorers, too. The museum is proud to be family friendly, with interactive elements and play stations throughout the galleries. Children can enjoy dressing up, borrow an Explorer Backpack, follow trails and quizzes, and have fun with ride-on toys as they explore the collections together.
When it's time for a break, take advantage of the museum's indoor and outdoor seating areas. Bring your own picnic or pick up cold drinks, including juice boxes, and snacks at the museum. A highchair is available in the indoor seating area.
Four-legged visitors are welcome, too! We're a dog-friendly museum, so well-behaved pet dogs and assistance dogs can join you on your visit, provided they're kept on a short lead.
Whether you're interested in local history, transport, traditional trades or simply looking for an enjoyable day out with the family, Tiverton Museum offers something to discover around every corner. Group visits for parties of 10 or more adults are also welcome, with coach drivers admitted free.
