Jacob’s Ladder Beach sits at the western end of Sidmouth’s seafront and is known for its striking red cliffs, long stretch of sand and shingle, and colourful beach huts. It takes its name from the wooden staircase leading down from Connaught Gardens, offering one of the most scenic approaches to the beach.
This part of the coast is popular with both locals and visitors, offering a relaxed setting with stunning views across the bay. At low tide, rock pools appear across the shoreline, providing a great opportunity for children to explore. The cliffs behind the beach also provide some natural shelter from coastal winds, making it a pleasant spot for sunbathing and picnics.
Jacob’s Ladder Beach can be reached either by the steps from Connaught Gardens or via level access from Sidmouth Town Beach, where the level route is suitable for pushchairs and visitors with limited mobility. Public toilets are located in Connaught Gardens, and deckchairs are available to hire during the main season. A selection of cafés and restaurants can be found nearby, ideal for light refreshments or a meal after a day by the sea.
Swimming is permitted within designated buoyed areas, which are clearly marked during the season. While there is no lifeguard service, the beach is well used by families and visitors year-round. Visitors are advised to take care near the cliff base due to the risk of occasional rockfalls.
Dogs are allowed on the western end of the beach throughout the year. From 1st May to 30th September, a seasonal dog ban applies to the main section of the beach closest to Jacob’s Ladder. Fires and barbecues are not permitted at any time.
Jacob’s Ladder Beach is a short walk from Sidmouth town centre and remains one of the area’s most popular and photogenic seaside spots.
