Salcombe, located on the South Devon coast and named as one of the UK’s most beautiful seaside towns, has long been celebrated for its stunning scenery and tranquil atmosphere. With its golden beaches, pastel-coloured houses, and winding estuary paths, it’s the kind of town that makes you want to pause and take it all in.

Recently, Salcombe found itself in the spotlight as the filming location for The Roses, the highly anticipated reimagining of the 1989 classic The War of the Roses. The film stars Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch as Ivy and Theo Rose, alongside other notable actors including Andy Samberg, Ncuti Gatwa, Kate McKinnon and Allison Janney. While the story is set in California, the filmmakers were drawn to Salcombe for its unique charm and coastal beauty.

Why Salcombe

Director Jay Roach knew almost immediately that Salcombe was the right place for the film. While the crew had looked at other coastal towns, he said he was “instantly sure” this was where the story should be set. Speaking to the BBC, he praised the light in South Devon as “so spectacular” and described Salcombe as a “dreamy little beach town.”

“It’s paradise and everybody is so friendly. The people in Devon were so amazing. It was really delightful… I want to figure out how to spend more time there.”

It’s easy to see why the town made such an impression. For anyone visiting, the combination of sparkling estuary waters, colourful streets, and a welcoming atmosphere makes Salcombe feel like a place worth lingering in. The charm that drew the filmmakers also delights those exploring the town for the first time, providing the perfect backdrop for a stroll, a coffee, or simply a moment by the water.

One of the most recognisable locations in The Roses is The Winking Prawn, a much-loved spot among locals and visitors alike. In the film, it becomes the quirky café “We’ve Got Crabs”, appearing in several key scenes. Nestled above North Sands Beach, the restaurant’s position overlooking the estuary made it the perfect setting for the story’s seaside moments. Visitors can still enjoy the same stunning views, along with fresh seafood and a welcoming atmosphere that embodies the heart of Salcombe.

North Sands Beach

Just below The Winking Prawn, North Sands Beach features prominently in the film. Its wide, golden sands and calm waters create the idyllic backdrop the filmmakers were seeking. Walking along the sands, visitors can spot the same stretches of beach the film features, enjoying the estuary views that appear on screen. It’s the perfect place for a peaceful stroll, a paddle, or simply to sit and soak in the beauty of South Devon.

Cliff Road

Another iconic location is Cliff Road, which winds along the coast linking Salcombe’s town centre with North Sands. The film captures its sweeping views across the estuary and beyond, showcasing why the director described Salcombe as ‘paradise’. Walking or cycling along Cliff Road allows visitors to follow in the footsteps of the film’s characters while enjoying some of the best vantage points of the town and its coastline.

Seeing Salcombe on the screen in The Roses is a reminder of why so many people are drawn to this charming coastal town. Beyond the locations featured in the film, visitors can discover its winding streets, independent shops, and inviting culinary scene, or enjoy the waterfront and its estuary with a boat trip or leisurely walk. While the film captures the town’s beauty, its full atmosphere and charm are only truly felt by exploring it yourself.
