Bringing History to Life

Our exhibits will lead you back in time to discover what the Romans left in Highweek, reveal how our World War II allies formed ‘Little Poland’ in Stover and find out how rats ruined Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s grand plans. The Museum is Newton Abbot’s top all-weather experience – and it is free to visit. Whether you are planning a family outing, group or school visit, or simply popping in - we have something to inspire everyone.

Hands on with History

Experience Newton Abbot’s rich history through interactive displays and discover remarkable stories and fascinating facts.  Have a go at designing an Aller Vale pot, sending a code on the signal bells, powering the signal levers, finding a historical hat to suit or feeling the difference between rich and poor Victorian fabrics. We have over 20 fun activities to try!

Our interactive screens show how the town has developed since the 1700s through a series of old maps. You can also scroll through some photographic highlights or search the museum's collection of 5,000 images. View our film archives or listen to the tales of a railway age gone-by.
