Positively Pastels
A GROUP OF DEVON ARTISTS CELEBRATE THEIR LOVE OF PASTELS
A group of Devon artists have come together to produce an exhibition of pastel paintings, at Harbour House, Kingsbridge from 20th July to 1st August.
This is a rare chance to see an exhibition of art featuring work that is all produced using the medium of pastels. The group of 7 artists all share a passion for an art medium that is often overlooked, and they are keen to show the range of work it can produce.
Each day during the exhibition one or more of the artists will be painting in the gallery and there will be samples of pastels, tools and different papers to give visitors an insight into the process of pastel painting. And maybe have a go themselves!
One of the artists, Wendy Chudley, says; "We are a group of like-minded artists from Devon with a passion for painting in pastels. We approach our work individually using a wide range of styles, from bold strokes to blending, dry or wet. We have produced an eclectic display of colourful paintings and drawings for visitors to enjoy."

The artists all take their inspiration from the dramatic landscapes, seascapes and animal life of Devon, but each also has individual interests.

Rebecca de Mendonça, an Associate member of the Society of Equestrian Artists, captures the character of native ponies of Dartmoor and Exmoor, as well as the carefree simplicity of children on the beach. Walking the whole of the South West Coast Path inspired Sue Miller, the exhibition organiser, to paint the countryside and shorelines. Sue also enjoys painting dogs.
Wendy Chudley's paintings often focus on the ever-changing skies or the continuous movement of the sea. She makes studies in the landscape and returns to her studio to start a new painting that captures the light, emotion and atmosphere of the moment. Cherry Lyons is drawn to the rich tapestry of colour-drenched textures and the unique light of the south west coast and landscapes.
As a student of the late Keith Stott, Carol Deathridge came to love the immediacy, versatility and forgiving nature of soft pastels. She feels a sense of calm and space in Devon which she endeavours to portray through her paintings. She shares an interest in Still Life with Lesley Meir, who also loves flowers and gardens. Anita Foord's favourite themes are flowers, the coast and the moors.

Rebecca de Mendonça, who wrote 'Pastels for the Absolute Beginner' in 2019, and teaches pastel courses in the UK, Italy, and online, says "I was delighted to be asked last year to exhibit with this group of artists, and to be able to further promote the versatility of this exciting medium. We are looking forward to welcoming visitors, demonstrating how we work with pastels, and sharing our enthusiasm."
You can see the exhibition at Harbour House, Kingsbridge from 20th July to 1st August 2021.
