To help you decide where to go, we’ve pulled together a list of just some of the best castles, stately homes, and historic buildings that South Devon has to offer.

Powderham Castle, Kenton, nr Exeter

Considered to be one of Devon's oldest family homes, Powderham Castle is an enchanting day out for adults and children alike.

Very little of the castle itself has changed in its impressive 600-year history, but there are now plenty of attractions within its walls and surrounding grounds for visitors of all ages to enjoy.

Join a guided tour for an engaging walk around the castle’s many majestic rooms and uncover secret doorways, winding staircases and even a hidden ballroom! Outside, take time to wander round the extensive grounds and gardens for breath-taking views across the Exe Estuary.

For those with little ones, there’s plenty to get involved with – from treasure trails and a play fort to a delightful Pet’s Corner and even the chance to walk an alpaca! You’re truly spoilt for choice when it comes to picking activities here.

Powderham Castle is open from Sunday to Friday (Closed on Saturdays) from 11am-3pm. The Grounds and Courtyard Café are open from 10am-4pm.

Compton Castle, Compton, nr Paignton

Offering a bewitching glimpse into over 600 years of restoration and romance, this spectacular medieval fortress is a real must-see for history buffs.

Compton Castle was first a manor house, which was then enlarged in the 1450’s. Following the French raids on Plymouth in the 1520’s it was fortified. By the 1800’s, after the owners moved to Bodmin, the castle fell into ruin and was sold.  In 1931, Commander Walter Raleigh Gilbert, bought the castle and surrounding orchard and started its restoration.

Today, sitting proudly in a landscape of rolling hills and grounds, Compton Castle boasts features such as an impressive Great Hall, an atmospheric rose garden and an interactive Medieval Kitchen where you can mix your own herbs!

Saltram House, Plymouth

A magnificent and beautifully preserved Georgian mansion, Saltram House is undoubtedly one of South Devon’s most precious hidden treasures.

Sitting proud in Saltram Park, a much-loved green space of Plymouth, Saltram House is a Stately Home filled with treasures, stories and intrigue. Visitors can explore many of the original contents within its walls, as well as wonder at the delights of the beautiful 20-acre garden – filled with sights and smells to capture the imagination of all ages.

Close to Plymouth but in a world of its own, Saltram is the perfect destination to get back out into nature, soak up some history and unwind with a cup of tea and slice of cake.

Hemerdon House, Hemerdon, nr Plymouth

Built in the late eighteenth century by the ancestors of the current owners, Hemerdon House contains a wealth of local and family history, with artefacts collected by the family through generations bringing the building back to life.

Set in landscaped parkland, this charming Georgian house provides a fascinating and uniquely intimate insight into life in a country house throughout the decades. In fact, many of the guided tours are hosted by the current family members themselves – offering a truly personal touch to your visit.

Ugbrooke House, Chudleigh, nr Newton Abbot

Steeped in centuries of history and featuring iconic architecture and landscaping, Ugbrooke House is a Grade I listed stately home nestled in the rolling green hills of South Devon.

The Honourable Alexander Clifford and his wife live in the main house, but each summer, they open the doors to their house and gardens to allow visitors a sneak peek inside their family home.

Embark upon a guided tour to see priceless tapestries, furniture and military artefacts, and top it all off with a traditional Devon cream tea in The Orangery, which comes highly recommended by many a previous visitor!

Bradley Manor, Newton Abbot

Last on our list is Bradley Manor House.

Nestled amongst woodland and meadows, this small medieval manor house still feels very much like a relaxed family home. With some sections dating as far back as the 13th century, today the house is filled with a fine collection of furniture spanning from Tudor times right up until the 20th century.

The estate surrounding Bradley is just as intriguing - home to ancient woodland and lowlands teaming with wildlife, it’s the perfect destination for a nature walk alongside the local River Lemon, where dogs are welcome to take a dip!
