Discover the coastal charm of Teignmouth, Dawlish, and Dawlish Warren - three seaside gems nestled in Teignbridge, South Devon. Each town offers spectacular walking routes along the South West Coast Path brimming with dramatic views, maritime history, and nature’s best. Below are some wonderful walks that begin or end in one of these captivating waterside towns. Let’s explore! 

Dawlish to Dawlish Warren 

A flat, family-friendly route weaving along a sea wall or the beach when tides allow. Wander beside the renowned Riviera Line and enjoy the peaceful expanse of Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve, a haven for migratory birds and rare flora. Don’t miss the Point - an idyllic spot for sweeping views over the Exe Estuary toward Exmouth.  

Dawlish to Teignmouth 

This walk takes you along the coastline, hugging the railway and passing through rugged scenery. Begin at Dawlish Station, then head along the sea wall and explore Coryton Cove, a charming beach with vibrant huts and rock pools. Navigate steep climbs and stretch through Holcombe before rejoining the coast via Smugglers Lane. The route ultimately leads into Teignmouth. A delightful way to return? Catch the hourly train back, frequent departures make it a scenic and convenient choice.  

Teignmouth to Dawlish 

Essentially the reverse of the previous walk, this route starts along Teignmouth’s seafront, leads past Sprey Point, and continues alongside the Riviera Line before transitioning to Smugglers Lane and through Lea Mount Park, before rejoining the coast wall toward Dawlish. While the start is gentle, the terrain becomes hilly toward the end. 

Teignmouth to Dawlish Warren (via Coast Path) 

This moderate-level hike spans approximately 5 miles and takes 2–2.5 hours. It’s perfect for an active, immersive walk beside the beach and the railway, with opportunities to enjoy seaside views and perhaps a sweet break in Dawlish Warren before heading back.  

Teignmouth to Torquay 

The journey from the charming seaside town of Teignmouth to the vibrant resort of Torquay takes you along some of South Devon’s most striking coastline. After crossing the River Teign to Shaldon, the path climbs over cliffs and meanders past Maidencombe and Babbacombe. Along the way, you’ll discover secluded coves and sandy beaches, each offering breathtaking views. Although certain sections are steep, the spectacular panoramas across the South Devon coast make the effort worthwhile. Exeter to Dawlish Warren 

Exeter is a lively city rich in history, and the walk from here to Dawlish Warren offers a wonderful mix of scenery along the way. Beginning at Exeter Quay, the route follows part of the Exe Valley Way, leading you beside the canal and the River Exe. Passing by the impressive Powderham Castle, you’ll soon arrive at Starcross, where the path joins the South West Coast Path. From here, you can enjoy sweeping views of the coastline as you continue toward the seaside destination of Dawlish Warren.   • Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve: A protected area teeming with wildlife; from rare dune plants to a diversity of birds and even sand lizards, offering a refreshing natural interlude. 

  • South Devon Railway Sea Wall: A historic pathway built for Brunel's railway since 1846; it’s both a scenic walking route and a significant engineering marvel. 

  • Legend of the Parson and Clerk: Just offshore is a famous rock formation linked to Devon folklore. These stacks are visible from the coast path between Parson’s Tunnel and Teignmouth.
