You can expect a warm welcome at Kitley House Hotel, a historic manor house serving delicious, unpretentious food made from fresh, locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients. The restaurant has recently been awarded One AA Rosette following the arrival of new head chef Ben Davies, who has updated the menu, introducing more adventurous fare alongside old favourites served with a modern twist.

Kitley’s suppliers are as local as it gets: the Blackmore-Matthews family breeds the restaurant’s succulent pork, chicken, and duck right on the estate; local butcher Gribble’s supplies the beef; fresh fish is sourced from Plymouth, Brixham or Newlyn markets; while rainbow vegetables, potatoes, and brassicas are grown at Pips fruit and veg farm just across the road from the hotel.

The 500-year-old manor house is full of history, but the atmosphere is friendly and informal. There’s a choice of dining options, all with views over the gardens and extensive family-run estate: relax in the bar where classic bistro dishes are available throughout the day or eat from the restaurant’s a la carte menu in the evening.

On Sundays, the hotel has a laid-back feel that’s perfect for making the most of the weekend, serving all-day Sunday roasts from midday through to 9 pm. Enjoy an aperitif while listening to live music from the hotel’s resident pianist, then while away the afternoon with a Sunday roast or a Devon Cream Tea to jazz tunes from the Ronnie Jones Trio.

Kitley offers seasonal fine dining and wine tasting events, a superb way to sample a creative five-course dinner perfectly paired with a selection of divine wine. You can also book for private lunches and parties.

Special dietary requirements can be catered for if advised at the time of booking.

Waited almost an hour for a sandwich at lunchtime. Politely reminded the manager we were waiting and was told it was on its way. Continued waiting until finally gave up and walked out. Read full review
