Blissful happiness at The Donkey Sanctuary

Set along the historic Jurassic Coast and nestled in the tranquil East Devon countryside in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is The Donkey Sanctuary; an award-winning visitor attraction home to hundreds of friendly rescue donkeys just waiting to meet you – completely free of charge.

The Donkey Sanctuary celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2019, after being founded as a charity in 1969 by Dr Elisabeth Svendsen MBE. To mark the occasion and showcase their international work, the charity unveiled its ‘Donkeys Matter’ garden at the 2019 RHS Chelsea Flower Show before relocating it to the sanctuary. The multi-award winning garden, which demonstrates the vital importance of donkeys in providing some of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable communities with access to clean, fresh water, is now on display at the sanctuary for all to enjoy.

Learn more about the far-reaching work of The Donkey Sanctuary and the vital lifeline donkeys provide for communities around the world in the new Exhibition Barn, before taking sanctuary in the award-winning restaurant, The Kitchen. Enjoy fresh, local, seasonal dishes while soaking in the unrivalled coast and country views across donkey paddocks, Devon’s rolling hills, and the coast. Great value group menus are available and include a complimentary meal for the driver and a guided tour of the sanctuary.

And for a souvenir to remember your visit by, the new Gift Shop is the perfect place to a pick up quality donkey-design items or gifts. Browse at leisure in the knowledge that every stylish purchase goes towards helping donkeys in need.

Admission and parking is free (donations welcome) and groups of any size are welcome, with designated coach parking available on-site. There is an easy drop zone right at the entrance for coaches - so access is never an issue. Pre-booking for groups is essential with a minimum one week’s notice. To book, please call 01395 578222.

The Donkey Sanctuary is open 364 days a year from 9am – 5pm (4pm November – February). All proceeds go towards the work of The Donkey Sanctuary worldwide.
