An intimate night of melody & mystery
Spend Valentine's night in a spellbinding world of music as Mae Karthauser brings old songs, new tales, and the magic of August to the Moor Imagination Centre. An intimate, otherworldly evening of voice, piano, cello and flute. All ages.
Step into an evening where reality loosens its seams. Devon-based songwriter Mae Karthauser — often compared to Joanna Newsom, Agnes Obel, and Joni Mitchell yet unlike any of them — conjures a world that shimmers at the threshold between the familiar and the uncanny. Her voice, rich and acrobatic, moves like a lantern through shadowed corridors, illuminating unexpected corners of the imagination.
Her latest album, August, emerged from a month-long ritual of writing a song each day — a practice that distilled something potent and alchemical. Arranged for piano, flute, cello, and braided vocals, these pieces bloom with a strange, haunting beauty: intimate yet expansive, delicate yet edged with quiet wildness.
This special performance will journey through both old and new songs, weaving together fresh incantations with beloved past creations. The set unfolds like a living, shape-shifting creature — dream-touched, unpredictable, and unafraid of the darker hues — inviting listeners to wander through hidden clearings, half-remembered tales, and luminous in-between spaces.
"Honest, authentic and relatable… a colourful and captivating atmosphere that beckons you to stop and take it all in." — Folk Radio
"Epic… gorgeous… ethereal" — CLASH

Mae is joined by Ben Roberts on cello and Ronja Schlumberger on flute and backing vocals.
