Buckland in the Moor, Dartmoor

Buckland-in-the-Moor is one of Devon’s most picturesque villages, tucked away on the edge of Dartmoor National Park in the heart of South Devon. Often described as one of the county’s ‘dream villages’, this peaceful Dartmoor settlement is known for its thatched cottages, historic character, beautiful countryside views and close connection to the surrounding moorland landscape.

Set above the wooded valley of Holne Chase, Buckland-in-the-Moor is a wonderful place to visit for anyone looking to experience the quieter, more traditional side of Devon. The village has a timeless feel, with pretty cottages, narrow lanes and a tranquil rural setting that makes it ideal for walkers, photographers, nature lovers and those exploring the Dartmoor area. Its location makes it a lovely stop during a South Devon day out, particularly for visitors travelling between AshburtonWidecombe-in-the-Moor, Dartmeet and other popular Dartmoor beauty spots.

At the heart of Buckland-in-the-Moor is its medieval church, built using stone quarried from the surrounding moor. This historic church is one of the village’s most distinctive features and adds to the sense of heritage that makes Buckland-in-the-Moor so special. Visitors can enjoy a gentle wander through the village, taking in the traditional architecture, peaceful atmosphere and scenic views across the surrounding woodland and countryside.

One of the best-known landmarks near Buckland-in-the-Moor is Buckland Beacon, a rocky outcrop above the village. From here, visitors can enjoy far-reaching views across Dartmoor and discover the famous Ten Commandments Stones, where the commandments are carved into stone tablets. Buckland Beacon is a memorable place to visit and a rewarding destination for those who enjoy walking, local history and dramatic Dartmoor scenery.

For longer walks, the area around Holne Chase and the Ashburton Road offers access to beautiful woodland, quiet lanes and open countryside. Nearby Dartmeet, one of Dartmoor’s best-loved beauty spots, is also well worth visiting, with its riverside scenery, walking routes and classic moorland views.

Whether you are planning a short visit, a countryside walk, or a relaxing break in South Devon, Buckland-in-the-Moor is a charming Dartmoor village with plenty to discover. Accommodation is available in and around the area for those wishing to stay longer and explore more of Dartmoor and South Devon at a slower pace.
